Born in Argentina in 1993, Julia Sanjurjo is a singer, composer, arranger, and teacher. She graduated in Composition from the National University of the Arts (UNA).
She studied jazz and improvisation with various musicians both locally and internationally, including notable names such as Ernesto Jodos, Joëlle Léandre, Christine Correa, Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Fay Victor, Kris Davis, and Tony Malaby. She also pursued further studies in New York at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.
Julia's vocal performances cover a range of genres including jazz, improvised music, and contemporary music. She has also been actively involved in choral work with groups such as the Chamber Choir of the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP), Chamber XXI, and the National Polyphonic Choir.
As a composer and arranger, Julia has collaborated with various ensembles such as the Tropi Ensemble, EMC Damus, the Orchestra of the National Academy of Music "Juan de Dios Filiberto" (ONMA), the Academic Orchestra of the Teatro Colón (ISA), and the Centre of Experimentation of the Teatro Colón. She has received funding and support as a fellow of the National Fund for the Arts in 2015 and 2017.
Julia has also performed in several renowned festivals including the BA International Jazz Festival, the Contemporary Music Series of the San MartÃn Theater and the Cervantes National Theater, the CCM Haroldo Conti Jazz Festival, and the CCK Dome Jazz Series.
As a leader, she has released three albums to date: "Retrato" (2019), "Live at Cuerda Mecánica" (2020), and "Interiores" (2021).
In addition to her performances and compositions, Julia has served as a teacher, conducting lessons, workshops, and seminars at institutions such as the National University of the Arts (UNA), the Neuquén Municipal School of Music, the IUPA (Patagonic University Institute of the Arts), and the Buenos Aires International Jazz Festival.
Currently, she holds the position of composition teacher at the National University of Quilmes (UNQUI) and actively participates in various musical projects as both a leader and collaborator. Furthermore, she is currently pursuing a Master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln.
